Spiritual Direction The prayer of St. Augustine, "Lord, let me know myself, let me know you" has been reflective of my experience of, and how I approach my ministry Spiritual Direction. My goal as a Spiritual Director is to create an atmosphere that allows the Spirit to move freely. By being non-directive and staying out of the way, I invite people to an understanding of who they are, and who they are in Christ; as it is through the discovery of the self that we come to a greater understanding of God. Spiritual Direction is an invitation to enter into the heart, which Augustine refered to as an "abyss"... you may be surprised at who's waiting for you. Christ of the Abyss - Key Largo, Florida Thomas Merton speaks of the director as someone who is first willing to "see to his own interior life and take time for prayer and meditation, since you will never be able to give to others what you do not possess yourself". Richard Rohr has also stated, "you will only be able to take someone as far as you have gone yourself." from Adrian Van Kaam "It does not matter how much we have read or studied about spirituality but about how honest we have been with ourselves.” from Susan Muto “Learning unsupported by grace may get into our ears; it never reaches the heart. It makes great noise outside but serves no purpose.”
Though all are welcome, the majority of my clients have been men, either discerning the Diaconate or Religious Life, or Vowed Religious or Ordained I am a member of Spiritual Directors International “People travel to wonder at the height of the mountains, at the huge waves of the seas, at the long course of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars, and yet they pass by themselves without wondering.” Confessions 10.8 | | |
